Voices of Students – Listen Up

What?

“Voices of Students: Listen Up” is a campaign to promote a student-centric education system, where student’s views are given due consideration in matters and decisions affecting them – to let their voices be heard!

The campaign seeks to gain endorsement from 25,000 Malaysian youths, after which on 16 April 2011, a youth forum will be held to discuss on Malaysian educational issues and come up with recommendations to improve the system. Subsequently on 15 May 2011 (Malaysian National Youth Day), a report containing the recommendations will be submitted to the Ministry of Education, Malaysia.

Why?

Students are the main stakeholder of the education system. Hence, it is only appropriate if they are given the freedom and right to express their views and ideas in any educational matters involving them.

On 5-14 February 2007, Vernor Muñoz, the United Nation’s Special Rapporteur on the right to education, visited Malaysia to assess the Malaysia’s state of rights to education. In his report, he observed that “teachers, students and parents have little input on decisions concerning them. Their opinions are rarely taken into account in the elaboration of public education policies, in curriculum design or in decisions pertaining to schooling in general”.

Students have valuable opinions and inputs that can contribute to the betterment of the Malaysian education system. Students should be treated with maturity and respect; their voices should be heard and be given due consideration.
